NCAA Wedge Block Ban The NFL banned wedge blocks a year ago and the NCAA is now following suit. While the eyeblack ban was a cosmetic change, the wedge block is seen as a safety measure. The new rule states that the team receiving a kickoff can no longer have more than two players standing within two yards of one another, shoulder to shoulder. If so, the team will be given a 15-yard penalty, even if there is no contact on the play.
