Yes, there's no doubt Newton would've fit better in the spread. I wasn't saying
he wouldn't have if he hadn't been a criminal. But, he is.
I'm just saying John Brantley isn't chopped liver. Nor is he quitting/kicked
off the team. Thus, he deserves a chance to do what he does best. And that's
not in the spread. Meyer is smarter than this. Give the inexperienced
quarterback a chance to prove himself. If for nothing else, for his loyalty!

Subject: RE: [gatortalk] Is Zook back?

Well in the interest of full disclosure here is Rivals list of the Top 100
recruits for 2007. Please note #28 Cameron Newton and #47 John Brantley.
No one is saying that JB was "intended" to hold a clipboard. JB was
recruited to compete for a chance to play football at the UF, he clearly
couldn't beat out Tebow. Anything else is pure conjecture. Brantley is the
qb for Florida, that is the way it worked out, but willieg8r makes a good
point, with which I agree, that loosing Newton, left a gap in the
dual-quarterback line of succession.

Clausen, JimmyCalled a “10-year prospect” by many who cover California high
school football, Clausen has put up gaudy statistics and won a state
championship as a senior. What gets lost with all the talk of leading Notre
Dame to the promised land and 60-plus touchdowns in a season, is that
Clausen has serious football tools to back up the hype. He has a strong arm,
an extremely quick release and razor sharp accuracy. He’s got excellent size
and a good frame for a college or pro quarterback. His presence in the
pocket and the feel he has for the game are very advanced for a high school
player. You combine that with his physical tools and it’s obvious that he’s
special.

Here’s John Brantley’s recruiting page from Rivals.com.

He was offered by Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma in addition to Florida. As a
high school quarterback he was the one who broke all of Tebow’s high school
record. He was rated the 3rd best quarterback in the country at the time,
47th best player, 8th best player in Florida.

Not a bad record for someone who was intended to hold the clipboard on the
sidelines.

Scouting Report on John Brantley

by Mike Farrell - 06/19/2006

Brantley is a very smooth signal-caller with excellent feet and
top-of-the-line accuracy. He has adequate zip on the football and throws one
of the best deep balls of anyone in the 2007 class. He’s patient in the
pocket and has the feet to get outside the rush and throw on the run. He
needs to fill out quite a bit physically and his level of competition is in
question, but his mechanics are solid and he is accurate on all the
necessary throws. Brantley has good instincts and knows exactly when to
release the ball on timing patterns. He leads his receivers very well and
puts the ball in position for them to do the most damage after the catch.
He’s physically tough and can take a hit, allowing him to play some option
in college as well as tuck and run when needed. A leader in the pocket,
Brantley is very confident and doesn’t panic. Brantley can push the ball
at times when trying to get into tight spots and his arm strength isn’t
his strength, but he shows great follow-through on passes which leads to his
accurate touch and he gets the ball out quick.

...... "This business about changing your scheme to match your personnel is
fine when you first take over a program and have little say as to who is
there. Five or six years down the line however you should be recruiting
players that fits the style you like to play.".....

While I didn't read them all - there are just way too many pre & postgame
posts and opinions to comment on them all, this is one comment that seems to
sum the present situation up better that most I did read. IMO the cunumdrum
created by recruiting players that don't fit the offense you want to play
explains why the Gators will find themselves watching the SECCG and NC on TV
this year.

Cam Newton was recruited to be Tebow's replacement in the Urban Meyer
offense. In as much as Brantley does not fit in the Meyer style offense, my
guess is the only reason Brantley was recruited was out of respect for his
family's Gator legacy but without any real intention/plan/expectation that
he [Brantley] would ever be a starting Gator QB.

A bad "life choice" by Newton changed all that. Had things gone according
to what I believe was the "Urban Renewal Plan" for LAT - Life After Tebow,
at this juncture, Burton would be the QB backing up and the next in line to
replace Cam Newton and Brantley would still be on the sideline with clip
board in hand taking notes - ala Noah Brandise to name just one of many
that have filled that role over the years.
