I think this whole argument that it takes a "once in a lifetime" QB to make the Spread Option work is bogus, it's takes great players regardless of the system to make it work. Oregon has a QB that virtually no one knows, their RB is the one getting heisman votes.
Was Danny Wuerffel a once in a lifetime player ?? We ran a pro-style system then and only won one NC...we won 2 with a marginal spread option QB and one with a once in a lifetime QB, i could make the argument that the spread option is more QB friendly. My point is, regardless of the system it takes great players........
