Leon, I don't know where you get your information about Permethrin. It is not highly toxic in its consumer form. The concentrations are very safe in the consumer form sold. You can by the REPEL version many places. It is for clothing and dries into a very stable long-acting repellant. This is the compound that is used to treat the nets used in Africa. I think what you may have read about is people using it applied to their skin while also using DMSO our something similar. In its more concentrated forms (10% and above) you should take handling precautions and should be licensed to use it. However, in the products I recommended, if you use it as directed, they are quite safe. If you decide to bathe in it or drink it, I suppose that it would give you problems. By the way, the Permethrin is not particularly problematic. However, some of the solvents used to hold it are, but again, not in those products I suggested.
Permethrin is a synthetic version of a naturally found plant organic, pyrethrum. It is just more effective and doesn't have many of the other organics found with it. Deet at the 100% concentration can irritate the skin. It is no more effective than the 25% version. It does not last any longer. The mechanism for DEET is that it confuses the insect and makes everything around it seem like food. Consequently the insect cannot target in on you. Permethrin actually repels the insect. If it tries to challenge the permethrin, it will be a fatal mistake for the insect. The insects simply will not challenge it. When I am worried about being bit, I will put my clothing on a hanger and spray it with the permethrin solution and allow it to dry. If I am not going to use the clothing right away, I put it in a sealed Ziploc bag. The effectiveness of the permethrin will be preserved for quite some time. Once worn, you can usually wash the garment for at least four washings or about a month's time before it loses its effectiveness. Highly toxic. Use sulfur powder dust on socks, lower pants, not skin. Buy Repel, 100 % deet, on skin and clothing to repel biting insects. Also, don't wear royal blue, as it attracts biting insects. Mist your clothing and tent with it. It will last for four + washings. On your tent, it will last about two weeks. Repel makes a good spray or Bass Pro Shops sells a very good quart sprayer. For your skin, you could use deet. Concentrations above 20% are probably overkill and could irritate your skin. I always carried an old sock filled with sulfer powder to dust myself, this works.
