My wife and I have a division of the house on that issue. She wants me to wait 3 more years. I wanted to retire last May. If they would let me, I would slowly fade away into the sunset and work from Florida. Right now, I am not sure I can get away with that. However, we have a new dean and I think he is more open to the idea. At a minimum I would LOVE to come down in January and not return until sometime in April. The winters in Northwestern PA are pretty hard.
I really like Citrus County. It has a day or two of winter each year so I can remember what cold feels like. Originally I wanted to find a place somewhere along the St. Johns River like I had when I moved to PA. Unfortunately, it is almost wall-to-wall people all the way to Orlando now. In Citrus County I found a place with five acres that is very livable. I am spoiled in PA with all of the land I have around me. (I have two farms with 66 acres and 50 acres.) I have grown to really love country living. At our place in Lecanto, the subdivision has almost all 5 acre lots. I also like that it is not that bad of a drive to my Gators. I also like that the elevation of my land is really high for Florida. I can even have a basement! At his gate, the police confiscated 55 gallons of hard liquor. I am getting closer and closer to retirement and returning to God's country. Last spring we bought a house in Lecanto (near Crystal River.) Hopefully I will be able to go to a few BB games this winter. In a few years, I might even be able to get to some football games.
