This is not care bear football. These are athletes in which the university has greatly invested in or is willing to do so. If they can't hack it, or the parents can't, maybe they should go. I coach football. I expect far more from my players in the locker room than any joe shmoe fan would ever expect. They are students first, athletes second, and their responsibility is to their teammates is far before themselves. The idea that the coach should not be mad or upset or express it is just plain foreign to me. You wouldn't let your own kids get away with irresponsibility and disobediance, would you? How would you have him express it? I found it VERY telling that he did NOT chew him out by himself and isolated. He was surrounded by a whole bunch of players. So was that a teaching moment or a made for TV moment? He had a circle of players-- many I did not even recognize, surrounding Taylor. I imagine it was both moments. McElwain is building something here. He is changing a culture of a lack of accountability. He held a star to a higher standard in front of a group of players. While I normally subscribe to the "praise in public, admonish in private", that was a very public and teachable moment-- for Taylor and the whole team and nation. That is NOT what the Gators represent. He is trying to show that-- to parents, to recruits, to fans.... To not come down hard on Taylor condones it... I have no problem with McElwain's handling of the situation. If it was not "made of TV", then why was Taylor in the next series? There is more to this than meets the eye...
