Looking at those who are getting paid more, it looks like he might be better
than at least three or four of them. Time will tell.

Nice thought about giving it to his players…Would be immediate
termination—major NCAA violation.

As far as his salary amount being too much, time will tell. Saban’s 6.9
million is a bargain for Alabama. Florida made out like a bandit with what we
paid Urban Meyer and SOS. Both brought the University many times their
salaries. If you look at the data, the more successful the football program,
the more money the University gets in non-athletic scholarships and research
grants.

If McElwain coaches at Florida the way Mushchamp did, you are right and it
would be a scam. If, however, he turns out to be the next SOS or Urban Meyer,
then it is money well spent. As far as giving him a big raise, I think it
sends two messages. First, we appreciate having the team over-achieve the
first year. If Will had not messed up and if Will could have played at the
level he did without steroids, who knows what the season might have been.
$750,000 might not have been enough.

Subject: [gatortalk] re: McElwain gets a raise, now the highest paid coach in
SEC East

Anyone else think this is insanity? A 750k raise and over 4 million in salary?
He should've turned down the raise and given it to players. Or at least
advocated for them to get paid. What a scam! Hope you ticket payers enjoy
paying for this! - Foley Santamaria

GAINESVILLE -- After becoming the first Florida coach to win 10 games in his
inaugural season, Jim McElwain was rewarded with a raise.

The Gators’ second-year coach received a $750,000 bump on Feb. 1, the school
announced Friday.

McElwain, whose deal runs through 2020, is now the highest paid coach in the
SEC East, earning 4.25 million annually.

The 54-year-old coach's compensation ranks sixth overall in the conference,
behind Nick Saban ($6.9 million), Kevin Sumlin ($5 million), Hugh Freeze ($4.7
million), Gus Malzahn ($4.35 million) and Les Miles ($4.3 million).

"We recognized early in Coach Mac's tenure that he totally changed the vibe
around football for The Gator Nation and in the building," UF athletics
director Jeremy Foley said in a statement.

"Dr. Fuchs and I first talked about this in mid-October -- We didn't want to
make it about winning one game or advancing to the SEC Championship Game.

"We wanted to make a change because of the direction of the program and his
leadership. From the moment he set foot on this campus, he has steadily put
into place his blueprint for the football program. His efforts have been
relentless. We are very grateful to have him and his family in Gainesville."

Florida sprinted to a surprising 6-0 start in 2015, climbing as high as No. 8
in the polls. But following quarterback Will Grier’s suspension for violating
the NCAA’s performance-enhancing drug policy, UF’s offense tanked and the team
went 4-4 down the stretch including a three-game losing streak to end the
season.

Still, McElwain was named the SEC Coach of the Year by the Associated Press,
earning a $25,000 bonus. McElwain also received bonuses for leading the Gators
to the SEC Championship and the Citrus Bowl.

"It's great to know that our university and administration believe in the
direction we are taking this program,'' McElwain said in a statement.

"This sends a strong message about the things we are putting in place and the
work of the entire organization. It sends a real message in recruiting that we
have the support and confidence in our long-term vision.”
