It’s a choice, most of these football players would not sniff college, much less UF without football. And guess what, I played club lacrosse at UF, tore up both knees and have a bad neck, so yeah, the regular student can sacrifice the same way, just without the medical treatment and training staff.
And, the athletes do get paid, the value of tuition, books, room and board for the regular student at UF is about $21,000 ($43,000 for out of state). In addition to that the athletes now also get a stipend to account for the total cost of attendance – at UF I believe they get about $5000 per year, at FSU its like $8000… And you can’t just pay football and basketball, you have to pay every D1 athlete the same, most athletic departments would go broke. Of course, I may be biased as I am paying out of state tuition for my daughter. She doesn’t get the cool Nike swag, she had to fend for herself when the University shut down during Hurricane Martha, she doesn’t have a separate dining hall, nutrition and medical staff or get dibs on the best residential facilities on campus. In fact, she has to help pay for all of those things through the athletic fees that are automatically added to her tuition bill. So do I feel sorry for the athletes? Absolutely not. Should we be doing something to ensure their safety, absolutely. In their history they had 2 nine win seasons before Mullen. MSU has the second lowest sports budget in the SEC, to Vanderbilt. Mullen considered them to be a “developmental team”, meaning they had to bring in “potential” talent and make them better players. They have been to 8 bowl games in a row under Dan Mullen. No one has ever accomplished this at MSU. Mullen’s offense at Florida was #6 in the country the year he was hired at MSU, #1 in the SEC.
