Marriage is more than a formality of court papers, promises taken before the
fire or an oath taken in the church. It is more about fostering a bond, and
if it happens to be between two people from the same sex, should it matter?

INDIA IS A conservative country where a homosexual relationship is an
offence under section 377 of Indian penal court (IPC) but in article 14-1
(A), where people have the right to freedom and equality by which people can
choose any thing if it is not harmful for others.

Homosexuality, literally translates into an interaction or a romantic
attraction between two people of same sex. This is nothing new. It has been
there since the Vedic era but an issue undiscussed so frequently. Having
homosexual relationship is against the norms of society according to our
legal framework.

In the Bible also David, Ruth and Daniel were involved in such a
relationship. Its first appearance in print was found in 1889 through a
German pamphlet by Austria-Born novelist Karl Maria Kartbeny published
anonymously. This pamphlet got tremendous publicity in India. At that time
LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) organisation did a survey,
which showed that about 33per cent people of an age group between 18 to 59
years were gay or lesbians.

Still people hesitate to talk on this issue saying homosexual relationships
are a threat to religion and society. Gautam Panah, who is currently
fighting a case in the Supreme Court against section 377 of IPC says, "It
will help curtail HIV/AIDS and Procreation."

Tanuj 24, a student of Delhi University who is in a homosexual relationship
with Abhay 26, an engineer in the merchant navy says, "Nobody wants to help
us. India being a democratic country why can't we live together?" Adding,
"Our family is also against us. They do not want to keep relations with us
anymore. Even our society doesn't accept it but we are happy and we will
continue to live together."

Many countries like America, Greece, Greenland, Thailand etc have already
implemented it. In America, the govt. states, "Whatever a gay or a lesbian
does in their bedroom is their business not the government's." The
Australian government also supports gay and lesbian rights. So why are
people in India rigid in accepting new ideas?

In the 21st century people seek freedom but some people who are orthodoxed
resist and their psyche is difficult to change. To love a person of the same
sex is neither new nor wrong. A homosexual relationship is a pure relation
between two souls. If not today, after some decades this relation would be
accepted universally as 'Right to Love'.
