Jon, There is nothing universal about the implementation. It is not a proxy as you are thinking of. That code module (for both the transparent and traditional) simply intercepts the URL passes it to the WebSense server (using their protocol) and receives a reply (go or no go). If it is a no go the connection is terminated; if it is a go the connection is allowed to continue. That's it.
The concept is simple. The implementation of a transparent proxy in this situation is very difficult problem.
