Not to jump onto your post or anything, but I just wanted to add 
that the important part, where the average sysop is concerened,
as far as I can gather, is that the "B" version has a flash
capable bios, so that you can update your 3com firmware when
necessary.  Over the years, the flashable nics have been the 
better models.  The 3C509B is an outstanding card, as long as you've 
got a copy of 3c5x9cfg.exe to doink with the pnp and duplex stuff.
