I don't know the specifics, but Sendmail (www.sendmail.org) versions 8 and
later will IDENT to attempt to verify mail connections. You can modify
this option in the sendmail.cf file but most people don't bother. I think
IDENT is used for informational purposes only, unless your running sendmail
in paranoid mode. IDENT isn't typically relied on because it doesn't work
with some OS's and most firewalls will block it by default. Do a search
for IDENT on sendmail's website and you can get the specific details.
