I'm particularly unhappy since I had been very happy with my GB-100 which
was fine for us and a couple of years ago I was told that we could not get
maintenance on it any longer. We therefore bought a GB-1000 intending to
keep the GB-100 for backup. (We had too many connections for the low-end
boxes.) We've ended up keeping the GB-100 as our primary firewall since it
has proved more reliable and easier to handle for my staff.

Now it appears that we could not even get maintenance on the GB-1000 in
future without an upgrade to features we do not need on a box that has
turned out to be less functional for us than the older box.

I've loved the Gnat-Box, but suspect that I will be looking at one of the
newer and cheaper options from another vendor if we have to replace our
systems. . .

"after a life span of five years, support for the GB-1000 will end June 30,
2005."

So if you don't retrofit, you get another year of support, and that's it.
If you do decide to retrofit, you can pay a given amount and be without a
firewall for 10-14 business days, or pay twice as much for a refurbished
GB-1000 that they will cross ship so you don't suffer any downtime.
So there are your choices. Personally, I'm not very happy with any of them.

Its not everyday I reply to myself but circumstances merit so bear with me.
Since I posted the above I've been contacted by Geoff Phillips of GSS
regarding the initial information we received on the GB-1000 retrofit.
While the original information conveyed the impression that continued
support for the GB-1000 was conditional on the retrofit it is a relief to
know that this is not the case, and the retrofit does not appear to be ploy
to push upgrading to the GB-1200 - which was again my impression from the
original information.

It would have been nice however to have the retrofit covered by maintenance
agreement, but there are many ideal things in the world that never happen
and life goes on.
