I changed the permission on /var/log stuff:

Dec 12 23:54:39 gcc14 -- MARK --
Dec 16 19:35:55 gcc14 syslogd 1.4.1#18: restart.

No eth errors at all as far as I can see. Wild guess but I would blame
the RAID controller/kernel stuff, anyone has experience with DELL PERC
6/i under debian etch?
