Well, I guess it would be easier to write such free software tools
(including drivers) if free software developers had access to those NVIDIA
GPUs, say, in the GNU build farm ;-)

Now that said, I really don't know what the policy of the GNU farm is : do
you guys strictly refuse to install proprietary drivers, even when no free
alternative is available ? I'd find it a shame if you did, for I believe a
free stack can be built and enriched in whichever order is easier : I'm
ready to work on free high-level libraries now, why wait for someone to
produce free low-level drivers first ? (which might happen only in a few
months / years)

I wouldn't be surprised if in the early days of the GNU project (before Hurd
and Linux, when there were only userland utilities), GNU contributors were
invited to use proprietary Unices to develop and use GNU tools... I don't
see this as a goal but as a temporary but necessary means.
