Good day everyone, My name is Nchang Roy, and over the past six months, I have been working on my GSoC project, "libgomp Optimizations for Scheduler Guided OpenMP Execution in Cloud VMs."
The project had two main deliverables: reimplementing Phantom Tracker using eBPF and, building on this new implementation, introducing two new environment variables to libgomp, GOMP_WAIT_POLICY and GOMP_DYNAMIC_POLICY, to enable paravirtualized OpenMP optimizations guided by Phantom Tracker. It has been a long and challenging journey, with quite a few ups and downs along the way, but I'm glad I pulled through and have finally submitted my patches for review! I would like to sincerely thank my mentors, who have been a great source of support throughout this journey. At some point, this started to feel more like a research project than a GSoC project, but that's a story for another day! I would also like to extend my gratitude to the GCC community for giving me this opportunity. I plan to stick around and work on any necessary adjustments following the reviews. One thing worth mentioning is that the current patch series does not yet include an evaluation section demonstrating the performance improvements. We have conducted some preliminary benchmarking against the NAS Parallel Benchmarks and obtained encouraging results. However, we still need to standardize the experimental setup and carry out additional testing before presenting the results. We therefore decided to leave the evaluation out for now, but we plan to share it in the coming days. Overall, it has been a great experience contributing to GCC and open source software. I look forward to continuing to work with the community. Thank you very much! Best regards, Nchang Roy
