Sorry, I hadn't realized that C99 permitted that. The standard does
clearly state that in prototype scope it is treated as '*', so according
to the standard
f(int a, int x[static a]);
is equivalent to
f(int a, int x[static *]);
which is not helpful. Still, you are probably right that it would be
reasonable to extend gcc's support of this.
