I'd forgotton about xpdf. I'm getting the 'Can't open display' error
from xpdf too.
It's probably some toolkit check, since ChoX11 of course won't
check for it. Unless you've inadvertently linked to X11 instead.
If it's the former, then you can temporarily work around it
by setting the DISPLAY variable - "localhost:0" will do. But
you might want to find who is complaining.
epdfview also builds. When run it appears in the list of 'Application
tasks' and prints the following directly on the screen,
XESetCloseDisplay: not implemented
This is from ChoX11, and should probably be implemented:
http://tronche.com/gui/x/xlib/appendix/c/XESetCloseDisplay.html
But may be harmless initially.
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "(null)".
RANDR does things like screen rotation, resolution changing
and stuff in X. I think this warning will be harmless.
As for XPDF, you really want to obtain the old versions
and integrate the RISC OS patches:
http://www.pdf.iconbar.com/
I suspect this has its own native RISC OS frontend, voiding
the need for ChoX11.
