There's a bug outstanding for 4 years now - INT DBF columns treated as
REAL (DOUBLE) [1]. There's been a related talk on PostGIS ML [2] and

I believe a correct solution to this problem requires extending the OGR
data model to support 64bit integers for feature attributes. This is a
significant change, and will require an RFC.
I have not had any client interest in this issue and I have no particular
plans to address it.
