William,

I've verified that one of the updates of internal libtiff from CVS head
includes two missing byte-swapping (see
http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/changeset/16836#file5 and
http://bugzilla.maptools.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1924) that explain the error you
get with an older libtiff 4.0beta.

I'm not very surprised that upgrading to the new libtiff version is necessary
for the current geotiff driver, as it just worked by chance with the
combination of geotiff driver & internal libtiff of 1.6.0, so the conclusion
is : just upgrade your libtiff to CVS head or use internal libtiff.

I can update to CVS, but it would be nice to have a new beta package so there is some defined reasonably stable point in the source.

About gdalbuildvrt, some people apparently wanted it badly in 1.6.1, so here
it is ;-)

Yeah, I've received a few requests for it myself for my OSX binaries ;)

The related man and HTML pages for the utility will also be
generated in the build process (if that's what you mean by "a new doc package
with a help file for this").

According to Frank, the doc build option in the source is not really meant for public consumption. I had problems getting doxygen working reliably on OSX (something about some extra bits for doxygen needed by GDAL?). Frank has been providing premade doc packages as a separate zip download since 1.3.
