I missed this aspect of your post. In fact, I see that GDAL itself is
expanding EPSG:3035 into an invalid representation of the coordinate
system according to GDAL's rules. Yikes! This definately needs a
ticket.

I was wrong in the above. I had in fact looked at the wrong portion of
the "testepsg" output - judging based on the ESRI-morphed version instead
of the original.
The problem is a lack of LAEA support in libgeotiff which is rectified
by a patch produced by Even which I'll apply shortly as documented in:
