This doesn't fix you problem specifically, but may help.

We usually use the packages from the OpenSuse Geo repository, which has SLES 
specific builds available. (We are using SLES for most Linux servers in our 
organisation)

See:  http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Application:/Geo/SLE_10/

This saves either compiling from source or building our own SLES packages.

If we need something, like a new version which is not there, I have found the 
repository maintainers are very responsive to requests to provide updates & new 
packages.

While I like OpenSuse anyway, as a FOSS GIS "specialist" the Geo repository is 
the main reason I primarily use OpenSuse as a Linux distro.
