So, just like you immediately find something you've lost right after you
buy its replacement, about 15 minutes after posting this question I
discovered the solution. I didn't realize it but my fresh OS install
had the rpm versions of libdap on it. So even though the linker knew
about the version I had just built, it was trying to link to the wrong
one. I removed the rpm version, re-ran ldconfig and the gdal build
finished fine.

result each time. My OS is a fresh install of Centos 5.4 and my most
recent compilation attempts were with libdap-3.8.2 and gdal-1.5.2
following the steps I used to successfully compile under Centos 5.3.
Does anyone have any idea where to start looking?
