No takers?  Maybe a bug or feature request I need to add to the tracker?  Or fixed/changed in 1.9 already?

I have a DEM projected from a latlong area to a conic with -dstalpha, so there are triangles of nodata around the edges.  When I run gdal_contour with intervals, I get a ring of contours around the edge of the nodata area starting from the first interval above 0 to the minimum elevation of the DEM, plus more segments along the edge for higher levels that extend to the edge:


Shouldn't gdal_contour just create contours that *stop* at nodata edges?  Like if I had created contours from the original latlong rectangle:
