First, GDAL does not provide any visualization utilities so it seems
likely you are opening the file in an application that uses GDAL.
What application is that?

Second, could you perhaps point us to your PNG file?  They come in a
variety of configurations.

If nothing else, a gdalinfo report on the file would be helpful for us
to provide useful commentary.
