I have bunch of scripts using that FWTools package (which does not have a big difference to the last one that exists, 2.4.7) and despite the disk units we have not changed anything. I still had a try with GDAL-dev from gisinternals, compiled at 4/23/2012 5:52 AM. Result is the same with lots of "not recognised as a supported file format" errors but gdalinfo giving a normal report of the same images.
