I don't know at exactly what time the packages get built, but they are built 
daily.

Kaarigar,

The XYZ driver is not built as a distinct driver.  It is just built into the 
main GDAL .so/.dll.  If you are using pre-built binaries i may be hard to 
incorporate the change.  If you are building from source, just replace the 
xyzdataset.cpp file.

In any event, you can just run with the gdal_translate you have now.  It will 
just be inefficient.
