Jeff, The coordinates you are using with -te are not in the coordinate system of the image.
>From the docs -te xmin ymin xmax ymax:set georeferenced extents of output file to be created (in target SRS). Convert the lat/lon coordinates you are using to the srs of the image and then try it.
