Removing the '.aux.xml ' file and again running gdalinfo -stats indeed fixes the problem. I now get the expected statistics values. Thank you for your help. Well, perhaps you could first check if there is no .aux.xml file that would contain bad values. And if so, delete it before running again gdalinfo -stats.
