A grep in the ECW SDK code source shows that thhis error messages actuallys
comes from it. So it is indeed not related to the write side of the operation.
Are you sure that the ecw file is not corrupted ?
I am coming to the conclusion that it is indeed corrupt.
$ gdal_translate -of GTiff -co TILED=YES Saraji_South.ecw Saraji_South.tif
Input file size is 34361, 31930
0...10...20...30ERROR 1: Could not perform Read/Write on file
this got a little farther but died also.

a new image. and see if that will work.
