Ah, sorry, should have mentioned that: I'm on linux (64bit). 32 bit is a limitation anyway, I regularly need to view very large images... Btw building experimental stuff is no problem.

Hmm, sorry, that's not going to work either... No Matlab here. Would it work with Octave? I'd prefer a truly open source solution anyway, if possible. However, closed-source but free options are also considered.

Nope. Octave is too primitive and end of the line.
I prefer open source too ... when I'm able to make it work with it. Will hopefully work one day with Julia (already started playing with the very first steps)
