Can you use these tileindices with the -tileindex option to gdalbuildvrt?
Perhaps not if they are in different projections...
Hmm, I have loads of tileindex mosaics created with gdaltindex in shapefile

I agree this would be very useful, almost like having a tile index as a GDAL
data source. There is a related feature request here
