Are you asking if using geotools could somehow avoid the need for arcsde client libraries? If so, no.
Reasons: - Geotools uses the arcsde SDK (just via Java) - Even if that wasn't the case, calling java (geotools) from C/C++ (gdal) would be fairly difficult and not very portable. Why would you need ArcSDE support if you don't have an ESRI server license? If you have the server license, you should be able to download the client side libraries to match.
