Renaming the Gears.plugin fixes Gears on HFSx.
sudo mv /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Gears.plugin /Library/Internet
Plug-Ins/gears.plugin
I did not need to restart to be able to use Gears in GMail/Fluid.
