I've seem to have gears built and working on Ubuntu 9.04 i386.
I used geza0kovacs patch from above.
I had to chmod 770 third_party/gecko_1.9/linux/gecko_sdk/bin/xpidl
then make and make installers and then edit the rdf file for compatibility
with 3.5.1
from the daily ppa and it seems to be working now.
