Hey Dav -- It would be great to see Wikipedia add Gears support, but we don't have any control over them doing so. Like you mentioned, the best way for this to happen would be to add Gears support in Mediawiki and have Wikipedia pull that feature in. Some developers had started this project awhile ago but I think they got sidetracked. I'd be more than happy to provide advice if anyone here wants to do it.
