You can try to download the most up-to-date Windows Mobile 5 SDK from
MSDN. The version that we use is
Microsoft Device Emulator V2, 8.0.60801.00 (In an emulator window do
Help->About Device Emulator)
Microsoft Windows Mobile Version 5.0
OS 5.1.700 (Build 14343.0.0.0`) (Go to Start->Settings->System->About)

I suspect anything newer than this will work fine.

I think that looking at the OS version could be enough, but I am not
sure. Best thing is to try with each handheld model if you can.
