I had the same problem. I don't have a "Desktop" directory in my ~/ (a nautilus setting that I switched allows me to use the home dir as the "desktop"). On a hunch, I made a dir in my home called "Desktop" and tried to create the shortcut again; it worked. I then moved it someplace more convenient for me and was off and running.
