Ah -- do you just double click your file and open it in the browser, then Gears says "URL scheme is not supported"? If the url shows up as "file://" and not http://, then I think Gears will show that error. My current setup is using some kind of http server (apache 2.2 in my case) and accessing the files via http://localhost/path/to/file.html.
