Yes, at the moment, there is not a way for javascript to process a blob. I don't know if I would be as hasty to say Gears is half baked though -- Google tools are just tools. They have a specific purpose but they don't promise to do everything. So they might be fit for the task, or they may not be. :-) Even hammers can't do everything we want them to do, even if we treat everything as a nail!
