I think the best thing to do here is to accept accountability for having dropped the ball. Hopefully this will provide you with an opportunity to begin development and support of mainstream browsers (it is the #2 browser by marketshare) a little earlier. Then you wont be put in the position where you are on defense while annoying your supporters and users.
A simple "we are working on a new release and will be refreshing our process for supporting new browsers" would not only have diffused the situation, but likely brought praise. Hiding behind a "we only support release versions" then not having a version ready for release just loses credibility. That is the way I see it, if you dont agree, that is ok.
