I had the same problem: "I cannot see any option to install on
the screen whatsoever. There is just a blank space where the install
option should be."

I  solved this problem by removing Gears from Safari (http://
code.google.com/intl/en/apis/gears/install.html).

However, as far as I can tell Gears still does not work w/ F3.5.1 on
OS X.
