Jen described the exact same problem I am having. Gears installs,
Firefox or Safari reboot (having the same problem in each) and Gears
shows up in Add-ons under preferences. Only, Google doesn't recognize
it as installed. For instance, when in gmail and I go to activate the
offline reader, it will say that I need to be running google gears and
directs me back to the install page. Stuck in this loop. Uninstalling
gears doesn't work. I'm frustrated because I had it working with no
problem for several months. Not sure what changed or got updated that
changed this but I don't seem to be the only one.
