I just received my 4th clutch of U. phantasticus eggs
this morning! I've got 6 eggs incubating now, the
first clutch died off. Now here's the good part.
Tonight I witnessed and photographed them mating!!
Here's the scoop: I walked into reptile room at
approximately 7:30 EST and noticed a large brown area
on the plant in the cage w/ my pr. of U. phantasticus.
I turned on the lights and low and behold they were
mating in front of my eyes! When first observed, male
seemed to "hump" female once. The male was using his
left hemipenis. When lights were turned on they very
slowly traveled together into a more leafy area of the
plant. When misted lightly they jumped slightly, but
stayed intertwined. The male held onto the female w/
his front legs, holding her near the neck. The males
tail was wrapped in a tube in similar fashion when
perching on a branch. The females tail remains flat. I
then took several photographs of the mating..though
mostly hidden. When the male finished and let the
female go he went into a more secluded are of the cage
and began to clean the hemipenis, licking it with his
tongue. The hemipenis is a dark purple mass. The right
hemipenis was not observed.
Hope this info may help some people somehow. I will be
posting pictures ASAP! I'm REALLY excited!!!
