Greg,

When I used to work at a petstore, we had these for a few months until we
sold them all.  We kept them in a ten gallon, there were about 10 of them.
The substrate was those fur bark chips, but I would prefer the mixture i use
for my Phelsumas.  This is 3 parts chopped sphagnum moss with one part
perlite free potting soil, and 1 part sand.  In the course of a month, the
vegitaion breaks down into a nice substrate.  Pothos vines flurish in this.

I do not know what their habitat looks like, but because of their enormous
range, they probably occur in a variety of places.  I like to use cermaic
tile in most of my cages because it heats evenly and provides a nice place to
burrow under.  So I would give them some tile to burrow under.  If you can,
offer them some leaf litter to forage in.  The floors of the forest have a
variety of fallen objects to hide under.

I always use live plants.  A small fern or a pothos would be great.  I never
once observed them climbing, but a lichenous branch couldn't hurt.  You, like
me, observed the soaking behavior.  This means they live in the proximity of
water, or so it seems.  To compensate this, give them a large shallow dish.
They ate anything.  A varied diet is the only diet.  With Xantusia vigilis,
you can keep multiple males and babies in the same cage.  This may prove true
for bark lizards except the males for obvious reasons.  UVB doesn't seem
necessary, but I would offer lighting atleast for the plants.  85 should be
the hot spot and 80 should be the cool spot.  You may find they like hotter
temps.

I hope this helps.
