Nicotine is very toxic to vertebrates, too. It's no longer sold as an
insecticide because it's much more toxic than most of the synthetic
pesticides in use. (Anybody else old enough to remember Black Flag 40?
That was nicotine.) A child can be fatally poisoned by eating only one
cigarette.
(I have to laugh when the magical type of organic gardener recommends
'tobacco tea' as a harmless, non-toxic, natural pesticide, although I'm
a (non-magical) organic gardener myself.)
