<< So how come he always publishes this stuff in these in-house newsletters
instead of the *real* refereed herp lit that other libraries have???>>

Now Beverly ~, he's published other things in major journals, he only hides
his more controversial ones in the dusty
back rooms over-yonder.
Good question though.

<< some of Kluge's phylogenies
make me nervous. He seems to select relevant and irrelevant traits
strangely. Anybody else feel this way?>>

Some of his works are indeed a little difficult, but then again, difficulty
never stopped those bozos who attempted reclassifying the entire Australian
herpetofauna - btw, I want a copy of that one, the one where they changed
Clamydosaurus kingi into Clamydosaurus darthvaderensis, Diplodactylus into
Skywalkerdactylus, and everything else with humorous, mockery names (does
anyone remember this?). Someone, somewhere may have a copy of this, and
with nothing else at their disposal, esteem it as the definitive
classification of Aussie herps.
