Have your dad cut the front pane you removed horizontally,
and silicone a strip of glass across the bottom and another
across the top. This will preserve much of the structural
strength of the tank. If you can get the right track, you
can use the remaining strip for the sliding doors. :-)
You can tape down the screen top to keep it from getting
knocked off. Use duct tape or similar.
For those of you who want to try this sort of thing, be sure
to smooth the cut edges of the glass with the black sandpaper
you can buy for the purpose. You will feel very silly trying
to explain your slashed wrist in the emergency room otherwise.
Btw, I converted a garage-sale bargain homemade 15 gallon tank
into a nice vertical treefrog vivarium by removing an end pane,
standing it on end and proceeding more or less as above.
