Hi Robert,
I've collected some locally, but can only get out once or twice a year
to gather a few, they're not common near where I live.
There are three kinds I use, two small species that are 1/8 to 1/4 "
diameter that I use for U. phantasticus and the European Garden Snail (whose
scientific name escapes me) that get much larger but are good for
U. henkeli. I collect some of these when I come across them, which isn't
too often. On trips to Newfoundland I've found places where you can literally
fill a bucket with this species. I have know idea what species the smaller
varieties are.
You might be able to buy various sizes of snails from escargot breeders,
I'm in Canada and haven't been able to find a supplier here yet.
It's interesting to watch U. henkeli eat a snail. They instantly recognize
them, even cb adults that have never encountered a snail before.
They usually swallow them whole, in one gulp.
