I think this is the rule rather than the exception when it comes to pet shops. Their
sources for geckos are usually low quality/high volume importers that buy cb leos for
cheap and keep them in mass set-ups.

Stick to reputable breeders and you'll be better off. You may not be able to avoid
parasites, they can show up no matter how clean or fastidious you are, but you can
increase the chance your geckos will be healthy by buying from people who know what
they are doing. I had much worse experiences than you with pet shops when I started
out in herps at about age 6. They should sell cat/dog food and forget about this
reptile stuff unless they are willing to do it right, which takes a *tiny* amount of
research with the power of the internet. Unfortunately a lot of cliches apply here,
"you get what you pay for," "buyer beware."
